“Revenant” (native title: “악귀”), a 2023 South Korean television series, is a gripping occult horror thriller that delves into the realms of possession, folklore, and the darkness within human nature. Aired on SBS from June 23 to July 29, 2023, and available for streaming on Disney+, the series captivated audiences with its chilling narrative and stellar performances.
The story centers on Gu San-yeong (played by Kim Tae-ri), a young woman preparing for the 9th-grade civil service exam. Her life takes a dark turn when she becomes possessed by a vengeful spirit, leading to a series of mysterious deaths. Teaming up with Yeom Hae-sang (Oh Jung-se), a folklore professor who can see spirits, they embark on a journey to uncover the truth behind these supernatural occurrences. Their investigation reveals connections to ancient rituals and a powerful curse linked to sacred objects.
“Revenant” concluded with a nationwide viewership rating of 11.2%, marking its highest rating and a successful return for screenwriter Kim Eun-hee, following her previous work “Jirisan”. The series received critical acclaim for its atmospheric tension, compelling storytelling, and standout performances. Kim Tae-ri's portrayal of Gu San-yeong earned her the Grand Prize (Daesang) at the 2023 SBS Drama Awards, and Oh Jung-se also received the Top Excellence Award for his role as Yeom Hae-sang.
“Revenant” distinguishes itself by blending supernatural horror with psychological depth. The series explores themes of human greed, trauma, and the societal pressures leading to despair, often depicted through haunting visuals and intense sequences. The folklore elements are deeply rooted in Korean traditions, adding authenticity and cultural richness to the narrative.
