"The Second Child" marks a compelling addition to Korean cinema in 2026, blending mystery, thriller, and fantasy elements into a haunting family drama.
"The Second Child" (native title: "그림자 아이") is a 2026 South Korean mystery thriller film directed and written by Yu Eun-jeong. With a runtime of 105 minutes and rated for audiences 15 and older, the film explores themes of grief, family secrets, doppelgangers, and a mysterious "shadow fairy tale." It premiered on July 1, 2026, and was produced with Lim Soo-jung serving as a producer. The story centers on a young girl awakening from a coma and confronting unsettling truths about her family's past.
After falling from a rooftop with her older sister, Soo-an awakens from a three-year coma. Upon waking, she discovers that her beloved sister Soo-ryeon is believed to have died by suicide, and the family has moved from their cherished home. Her once warm and affectionate mother, Geum-ok, now seems secretive and anxious. As Soo-an senses hidden truths surrounding her sister's death, a girl named Jae-in appears – bearing an uncanny resemblance to her late sister. This encounter revives memories of the "shadow fairy tale" her sister once shared: "A lonely shadow came looking for two children who look just like each other. Since you have two bodies, give me one."
Soo-an becomes entangled in the secrets of her sister's death, Jae-in's mysterious arrival, their abandoned old house, and the enigmatic shadow fairy tale, leading to a tense confrontation with a possible curse or hidden reality.
The film has drawn attention for its atmospheric tension, emotional depth, and eerie storytelling, with praise for the performances of its young leads and Lim Soo-jung's nuanced portrayal of a grieving mother.
Lim Soo-jung makes her producer debut with this project.
The original working title was "Shadow Child", which was later changed to "The Second Child" during post-production.
Filming took place in locations including Bucheon’s Hosu Botanical Garden (Sufia) for key greenhouse scenes, as well as Gwangju and Seoul.
Park So-yi noted the challenges of acting in empty spaces and prepared extensively on her own.
The "shadow fairy tale" book plays a central symbolic role, featuring dark illustrations tied to the film's mysteries.
"The Second Child" delivers a psychologically layered tale that keeps viewers questioning reality, identity, and the bonds of family. With strong central performances and a haunting narrative rooted in grief and the supernatural, it stands out as a thoughtful mystery thriller for fans of atmospheric Korean cinema.
The film had its world premiere at the 30th Busan International Film Festival on September 21, 2025.
"The Second Child" is available in theaters following its July 1, 2026 release.
