“The Legend of the Blue Sea” (Korean: 푸른 바다의 전설) is a 2016–2017 South Korean fantasy romance drama starring Jun Ji-hyun and Lee Min-ho. Written by Park Ji-eun – celebrated for “My Love from the Star” and later “Crash Landing on You” – and directed by Jin Hyuk, the series aired on SBS from November 16, 2016, to January 25, 2017, for 20 episodes plus a special.

The drama blends romance, fantasy, and humor with Korean folklore, weaving together a historical tale and a modern love story.

Premise

The series alternates between the Joseon era and the present day:

  • In the past, nobleman Kim Dam-ryeong (Lee Min-ho) rescues a mermaid, Se-hwa (Jun Ji-hyun), and shares a tragic, ill-fated romance with her.
  • In modern Seoul, Dam-ryeong is reincarnated as a skilled conman, Heo Joon-jae, who encounters Shim Cheong, a mermaid who has traveled into the present world.

As their lives intertwine across time, old memories resurface, revealing how destiny binds their love beyond centuries.

Main Cast

  • Jun Ji-hyun as Shim Cheong / Se-hwa – A mermaid from the Joseon era who resurfaces in the modern world, naïve yet strong-willed.
  • Lee Min-ho as Heo Joon-jae / Kim Dam-ryeong – A charming con artist in the present and a nobleman in the past, bound by destiny to the mermaid.
  • Lee Hee-joon as Jo Nam-doo – A veteran conman and Joon-jae’s mentor.
  • Shin Won-ho as Tae-oh – A hacker and part of Joon-jae’s team.
  • Shin Hye-sun as Cha Si-ah – An intelligent researcher and Joon-jae’s old acquaintance, who plays a role in uncovering the mermaid’s identity.
