“Mercy for None” (native title“광장” or “The Plaza”), is a gritty 2025 South Korean action-noir drama. Adapted from the popular webtoon “Plaza Wars” by Oh Se-hyung and Kim Gyun-tae, the limited series was penned by writer Yoo Ki-seong and brought to life by director Choi Sung-eun. It premiered on Netflix globally on June 6, 2025, spanning 7 episodes, each ranging from 37 to 49 minutes.
The story centers on Nam Gi-jun (So Ji-sub), a former top enforcer for the Bongsan gang who severed his Achilles tendon and exiled himself from the criminal world to protect his younger brother, Gi-seok. Eleven years later, Gi-seok – now a high-ranking member of the rival Joowoon gang – is found murdered under mysterious circumstances. Gi-jun returns, embarking on a brutal quest for vengeance and finding himself entangled once more in the deadly power struggles between the gang leaders of Bongsan and Joowoon.
Praised as one of 2025’s most gripping K-dramas, the show stands out for its relentless pacing and powerful performances by So Ji-sub and the supporting cast.
Critics highlight its noir atmosphere and subversion of the typical revenge drama – focusing not on catharsis, but on the corrosive cost of vengeance.
The finale delivers a cathartic yet tragic showdown that underscores the futility of vengeance and the emotional toll of Gi-jun’s pursuit.
Based on the webtoon “Plaza Wars”, the series retains the dark tone and complex narrative of the source material.
This marks his comeback to full-on action drama after over a decade, his Achilles injury adding a unique physical dimension to his performance.
Director Choi described how Gi-jun’s limp, from severed Achilles, was integrated to reflect his struggle and resilience, making every movement deliberate and emotionally resonant.
The cinematography leans into Seoul’s underbelly with moody lighting, tight urban spaces, and a score that emphasizes emotional isolation and moral ambiguity.
For fans of noir action thrillers, “Mercy for None” delivers a visceral, emotionally charged experience anchored by one of So Ji-sub's most compelling performances. Its exploration of loyalty, violence, and the cycle of revenge resonates beyond genre – marking it as a modern classic in Korean drama.
