"Knock Off" Season 1: from office worker to counterfeit kingpin. In the gripping black comedy crime drama "Knock Off", an ordinary man’s life is upended by economic crisis, propelling him into the high-stakes world of counterfeiting where ambition meets moral ambiguity.
"Knock Off" (native title: "넉오프 시즌1") is a South Korean black comedy crime drama directed by Park Hyun-seok and written by Han Jung-hoon. The series explores the rise of a man in the global counterfeit market following the 1997 Asian financial crisis (IMF crisis). It was produced with a substantial budget and structured as a two-season series, with each season consisting of nine episodes. Season 1 follows the protagonist’s entry and ascent in the illicit trade.
Kim Seong-jun, a regular office worker with a promising future, loses everything due to the IMF crisis. Forced into unemployment, he enters the counterfeit goods business suggested by his father. Through quick thinking and ambition, he rises to become the vice chairman of a major counterfeit operation at Saemmul Market. His path crosses with his ex-girlfriend Song Hye-jeong, now a special judicial police officer dedicated to cracking down on counterfeit goods, creating tension and conflict in their relationship.
As the series has not yet aired, audience reception remains anticipated based on the strong cast and compelling premise blending black comedy with crime elements set against a historical economic backdrop.
The drama reunites director Park Hyun-seok with writer Han Jung-hoon, following their collaboration on "Song of the Bandits".
It features a large ensemble cast with many talented actors known for dynamic performances.
The story incorporates real historical context from the IMF crisis and the early 2000s, adding layers of realism to the fictional rise in the counterfeit market.
"Knock Off" Season 1 promises a sharp, entertaining look at ambition, survival, and the gray areas of morality in the world of fakes. With Kim Soo-hyun leading a stellar cast, it has strong potential to deliver both laughs and thrills.
The series was originally planned for Disney+ with international availability via Hulu. However, its release has been postponed indefinitely.
