“Hotel del Luna” (Korean: 호텔 델루나) is a 2019 South Korean fantasy romance drama written by the acclaimed Hong Sisters (Hong Jung-eun and Hong Mi-ran). Directed by Oh Choong-hwan, the series aired on tvN from July 13 to September 1, 2019, spanning 16 episodes. Known for its unique blend of romance, supernatural elements, and striking visuals, the drama became one of the highest-rated Korean cable dramas of all time.
The show is centered around a mysterious hotel in Seoul that caters exclusively to ghosts, blending elements of fantasy, melodrama, and humor with a deeply human exploration of regret, forgiveness, and love.
The story follows Jang Man-wol (IU / Lee Ji-eun), the beautiful but ill-tempered CEO of Hotel del Luna, a mystical place that only the dead can see. Bound to the hotel for over a thousand years due to an unforgivable sin, she cannot move on to the afterlife.
Enter Goo Chan-sung (Yeo Jin-goo), a perfectionist hotelier who reluctantly becomes the new general manager of Hotel del Luna after a fateful encounter. Together, Man-wol and Chan-sung help wandering spirits find peace, uncover long-buried secrets, and slowly transform each other’s lives.
As the series unfolds, the relationship between Man-wol and Chan-sung blossoms into a poignant romance, all while revealing the tragic past that shackles Man-wol to the world of the living.
“Hotel del Luna” received both critical acclaim and commercial success.
The Hong Sisters originally conceived “Hotel del Luna” as a modern twist on ghost folklore, making it one of their most unique dramas.
The original working title was “Guest House of the Moon”.
IU personally curated much of Jang Man-wol’s wardrobe, leading to viral fashion moments every week. Her chic, vintage-inspired outfits became a cultural trend.
The hotel’s interior set was meticulously designed, blending Gothic and modern aesthetics to emphasize the eerie yet luxurious atmosphere.
The OST became immensely popular, featuring hit tracks like “Another Day” by Monday Kiz and Punch, “Can You See My Heart” by Heize, and “All About You” by Taeyeon of Girls’ Generation.
The finale teased a potential sequel with Kim Soo-hyun as the new hotel owner, sparking endless fan theories and discussions.
More than just a fantasy romance, “Hotel del Luna” cemented itself as a cultural phenomenon. It combined high production values, emotional storytelling, and star-studded performances into a drama that resonated with audiences worldwide. To this day, it remains a fan-favorite for those who love romantic fantasy with a hauntingly beautiful edge.
