Early Life and Education

Raised in Seoul, Jung Yi-rang attended Gujeong Middle School and Banpo High School, where she graduated. She pursued higher education at Hoseo University’s College of Arts and Physical Education, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Theater and Film. She later enrolled in Hanyang University’s Graduate School of Education for a doctorate in Theater and Film Education but did not complete the program.

Career

Jung Yi-rang debuted in 2005 on SBS’s “People Looking for Laughter” with the skit “Mokpo is a Port,” alongside Jung Il-jin, Moon Won-jong, and Yeom Ki-jung, delivering a standout comedic performance as a “madman.” She officially joined the industry as a comedian through MBC’s 17th open recruitment in 2008, appearing in popular segments like “That’s Right, Love is Bbi Bbi Bbi” (also known as “Love is Bung Bung Bung”), “Club Victoria,” “Why Are You Like This 2 (also known as “What's Wrong with Secretary Kim 2”),” and “Heidi.”In 2012, she became a crew member of SNL Korea, gaining fame for her foul-mouthed grandma character, which earned her the nickname “The Swearing Grandmother”. She also excelled in political satire, portraying characters like Guradoli in “Yeouido Teletubbies”, Red Jun-pyo in “My Ugly Produce 101”, and Kim Hye-kyung in “Cold Opening”. In 2016, she joined the Sunday segment “Laughter Task Force F4 Season 3” on “Two O’Clock Escape Cultwo Show” as a regular.In March 2015, she changed her name from Jung Myung-ok to Jung Yi-rang, a transition reflected mid-season during “SNL Korea Season 6,” also known as “Saturday Night Live Korea Season 6.” After her contract with Koen Stars expired in 2017, she signed with Imagine Asia in 2018, marking her shift to acting – a long-held ambition. She had balanced acting roles during her comedy career, but this move solidified her transition. During her over-a-decade tenure with “SNL Korea,” she performed as a comedian in the tvN era and as an actress starting with the “Coupang Play” era. She later signed with Management Gil in 2021 and Total Set agency in 2023, under which she is currently managed.

Personal Life

Jung Yi-rang is married to Kim Hyung-geun and is a mother to two children: a daughter born on September 22, 2014, and a son born on March 23, 2020. She balances her thriving career with her family life, maintaining a strong presence in both spheres.
