“Alchemy of Souls” (native title: “환혼”) is a 2022 South Korean fantasy-romance drama that aired on tvN and was released globally via Netflix. The series ran in two parts: Part 1 (June 18 – August 28, 2022, 20 episodes) and Part 2: “Alchemy of Souls: Light and Shadow” (December 10, 2022 – January 8, 2023, 10 episodes).
Created by the famous screenwriting duo Hong Jung-eun and Hong Mi-ran (the “Hong Sisters”), who previously wrote hits like “Hotel Del Luna” and “You’re Beautiful”, the drama captured worldwide attention with its sweeping visuals, inventive magic system, and emotionally charged romance.
Set in the fictional country of Daeho, which does not exist in history or on maps, Alchemy of Souls follows a world where mages harness powerful sorcery. At the center of this universe is the forbidden spell of “hwanhonsool” (the alchemy of souls), which allows souls to switch bodies.
The story begins with Nak-su (Go Yoon-jung), a feared assassin, who in her dying moments casts the alchemy spell and awakens in the frail body of Mu-deok (Jung So-min), a blind servant girl. Stripped of her powers, Nak-su – now Mu-deok – finds herself entangled with Jang Uk (Lee Jae-wook), a noble young mage with untapped potential, infamous for his inability to harness energy due to a sealed gate of power.
Together, the two form an unlikely master-disciple bond: Mu-deok, secretly Nak-su, becomes Jang Uk’s teacher, pushing him to become the powerful mage he was destined to be. As secrets unravel, betrayals surface, and destinies collide, their relationship evolves into a poignant romance tested by curses, reincarnation, and fate itself.
Part 1 averaged around 6–8% nationwide ratings, considered strong for a cable drama, with the finale peaking at over 9%. Part 2 maintained similar success.
“Alchemy of Souls” became a major hit on Netflix, frequently appearing in the Top 10 most-watched shows in over 20 countries. It gained strong fanbases in North America, Southeast Asia, and Europe.
Reviewers praised its rich world-building, witty dialogue, romantic tension, and high production values. Some noted pacing issues in Part 2, but overall the drama was hailed as one of 2022’s most ambitious fantasy-romance K-dramas.
International fans adored the chemistry between Lee Jae-wook and Jung So-min in Part 1, while Part 2 drew debate about the transition to Go Yoon-jung as the female lead, sparking intense discussions online.
Filmed with an estimated budget of 30 billion won (~$24 million), making it one of the most expensive K-dramas of 2022.
Many of the fantastical sets were filmed in Mungyeong Saejae Open Set and specially constructed outdoor sets, blending real landscapes with CGI.
Known for blending fantasy and romance, the writers infused humor and heart while exploring darker themes of destiny and loss.
Initially, Go Yoon-jung was announced as the main lead, but Jung So-min played the role in Part 1, before Go Yoon-jung reprised Nak-su in Part 2.
The drama revived global interest in Korean fantasy lore, leading to discussions comparing it with “Goblin” and “Arthdal Chronicles”.
“Alchemy of Souls” stands as one of the most iconic K-dramas of 2022, offering a perfect mix of magic, destiny, and love. Its blend of wuxia-inspired action, romantic longing, and high fantasy mythology captivated audiences worldwide. Whether for its breathtaking fight scenes, emotional performances, or rich lore, the series cemented itself as a must-watch for fans of epic fantasy K-dramas.
